In this article we use the British National Corpus (BNC), the largest balanced corpus of British English available today, to explore variations in the use of amplifiers in terms of a wide range of sociolinguistic variables. Specifically, we examine 33 amplifiers across the following dimensions: discourse mode and register, The British National Corpus and this site. The British National Corpus (BNC) is a carefully-selected collection of 4124 contemporary written and spoken English texts, primarily from the United Kingdom. The corpus totals over 100 million words and covers a representative range of domains, genres and registers. The British National Corpus (BNC) and the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) complement each other nicely, since they are the only large, well-balanced corpora of English that are freely-available online. Here we will briefly compare the two corpora in terms of corpus size, genre coverage, and how up-to-date they are.
